POW/MIA INSIDERS GLOSSARY

 

KHMER ROUGE:  The communist forces in Cambodia.

 

KISS:  Keep It Simple Stupid.  The basic premise for all POW/MIA operations.

 

KIA:  Killed in Action.

 

KLICK:  Military verbal shorthand for one kilometer.  One kilometer equals six-tenths of a mile.

 

KOC:  Kingdom of Cambodia.

 

LEAD:  The investigative requirement, joint or unilateral, to obtain information for achieving the fullest possible accounting of unaccounted for Americans.  One case may have multiple leads.

 

LIFE SUPPORT ANALYST:  The career field (USAF and USN) that specializes in ejection seats, parachutes, and pilot life support.  LSA’s can augment both investigative and recovery teams and provide on-site analysis of aircraft wreckage.

 

LIVE SIGHTING INVESTIGATION/INVESTIGATOR:  An investigation of incidents or information concerning unaccounted for personnel who are believed to have survived their initial loss incidents and remained alive, either in captivity or living freely.

 

LKA:  Last Known Alive.  Cases in which the U.S. has information the individual survived his loss and fell into enemy hands.

 

LNO:  Liaison Office.

 

LPDR:  Laos People Democratic Republic.

 

LSEL:  Life Science Equipment Laboratory.  Located at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.  Provides scientific analysis of aircraft wreckage.

 

LSI:  Life Support Investigator.  Deploys with the teams to Southeast Asia and provides field analysis of located aircraft wreckage.

 

LZ:  Landing Zone.
