POW/MIA INSIDERS GLOSSARY

 

GNBN:  Good News Bad News.

 

GOATFUCK:  What usually happens to a Team Commander while deployed on a mission.

 

GPR:  Ground Penetrating Radar.  Supposed to be able to locate remains underground.  Looking for abnormalities and such.   I’ve used the GPR in the field on numerous occasions and I can tell you it does not work as advertised.

 

GPS:  Global Positioning System.  A piece of equipment that uses satellites to pin point your exact location on the ground.  Used extensively by all teams in SEA.

 

GRAVE REGISTRATION SPECIALIST:  This was the MOS (Military Occupational Skill) that was given to personnel assigned to work the mortuary affairs mission.  Later it was changed to Mortuary Affairs Specialist (MAS).

 

GRID:  In excavations, the matrix of square or rectangular divisions constructed over a site to map it and divide it into sections.

 

HANOI:  Capitol city of Vietnam.

 

HARD HELMET (HAT):  Hard diving apparatus used for deep salvage operations.

 

HF:  Acronym for High Frequency.  That band of radio waves (2-30 MHz) that allows transmission of both ground and air waves.  The Teams use the PRC-132 radio for field transmissions to the Detachment Headquarters.

 

HUEY:  A Vietnam era utility helicopter still used today.

 

HUMINT:  Human Intelligence.

 

HEARSAY:  Information which is obtained from the accounts of others raher than personal observation.

 

HUMP:  A term used by GI’s to describe walking through the jungle.
