POW/MIA INSIDERS GLOSSARY

ARVN: The Army of the Republic of Vietnam.  The South Vietnamese Armed Forces.

AFDIL:  Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory.  A Laboratory located in Rockville, Maryland, which supports CILHI in DNA analysis.

AFIRB:  Armed Forces Identification Review Board.  The AFIRB is a three person board convened to approve or disapprove CILHI identification.  This board is the final approval authority for an identification recommendation.

AIR:  Additional Information Report.  A report format used by Field Teams to report information obtained on a case not in their investigation plan.

ALICE PACK:  The U.S. Army’s ruck sack.

ALPHA ROSTER:  An alphabetical listing of our missing men from the Indochina War.

AK-47:  A Russian made 7.62 automatic assault rifle.

ART:  Archival Research Team that was established to research and examine new documents and material (e.g., libraries, museums, film storage facilities, veteran groups, military units, etc).

ARRIVAL CEREMONY:  A ceremony hosted by the U.S. Pacific Command (USPACOM) to render honors to remains returning to U.S. soil.  Normally conducted at Hickam Air Force Base (AFB); follows the formal turn-over of remains (repatriation ceremony) in Southeast Asia (SEA).

ASSISTANT TEAM COMMANDER (ATC):  The team member designated to assist the Team Commander (TC) and act as Team Commander in his absence.

ATFP:  Anti-Terrorism Force Protection.  The ATFP Officer for JTF-FA was James Webb.  He was responsible for all facets of force protection, anti-terrorism and counter terrorism issues for Southeast Asia.  He also provided training in ATFP to personnel assigned.

BANGKOK:  Capitol city of Thailand.

BLACKHAWK:  A new style ruck sack that is presently being used by JPAC personnel.  Replaced the old Alice Pack.

BLACKHAWK:  A U.S. Army helicopter used to transport troops.  Is used on some missions to transport Investigation and Recovery Teams in Cambodia.  The Vietnamese do not allow us to use U.S. military transportation in Vietnam except transport airplanes to initially land troops and equipment at Noi Bia, Hanoi; Tan Son Nhut, Saigon, and Danang City.

BARBERS POINT:  A Navy Base in Hawaii and where JCRC Headquarters was located after it transferred from Thailand.

BTDT:  Been there done that.

BOHICA:  Bend over here it comes again.

BRIGHTLIGHT:  The computer data base of information pertaining to the POW/MIA Issue.  Also a code name used during the war in Southeast Asia to designate the rescue attempts of POW’s.

BNR:  Body not recovered.

BR:  Body recovered.
